Secondary Trauma is a real thing. Parenting kids from hard places is hard and it's okay not to be okay. You are not alone.Let me tell you a little bit of what I’ve learned about secondary trauma; it’s definitely real & something that I, as an adoptive & foster parent, have experienced first hand. Secondary trauma can effect those of us who are caring for traumatized children; but the tricky thing is, I didn’t realize it until somebody else pointed it out to me. I couldn’t see it for myself because I was too busy running through the motions of being the main caregiver, trying to keep everything in order & putting on a “happy face” for the kids in my house that had suffered the trauma first-hand. I caught myself wishing I could run away from it all & just be alone. I guess I thought that was how I was supposed feel, taking care of high needs kids. My mental & physical health declined, my anxiety skyrocketed, my joy was gone & I became someone I no longer recognized. For me it took counseling, realizing I didn’t have to hold the weight of the world on my shoulders, taking breaks & rounding up an amazing group of people I can call on anytime to support our family.

So many of our amazing caregivers don't have the support they need to feel cared for themselves. 😢
This is why children are being bounced to different homes every night and why they're being separated from their brothers and sisters.
This is why Hillsborough County is in crisis from not having enough home for children in need.
Together, we can fix this and give homes to children in need!
